I would echo Pande and say, who's to know what the scenery in those mountains looked like? It's your story, so describe them as you please. (Well, other than the Himalayas, that would probably make me go huh.) But you can't go wrong with the Smokies for inspiration.

I've been in both the Smokies and the Catskills, and, yes, the Smokies could play the Catskills in a movie. LOL They're pretty much the same mountain range anyway. Plus, they aren't rocky, craggy, snow-clad peaks like I'd envision for the Misty Mountains.
If you're writing about an area that some people call hills, the Smokies would work perfectly in my mind.

Here's the link to "Promontory" from The Last of the Mohicans. Warning to those with delicate sensibilities: depiction of violence therein. PromontoryI just love this movie. What a tragic ending... and I'd better not get started on DDL. Oshun, it seems as though you can pick most hilly landscapes for your setting, and unless you get PJ deciding to film The Silmarillion in twelve movies (at least, if The Hobbit deserves two), you'll be ok.

Thanks for looking in!! I am going with my concept that tiny mountains translate as hills which look like mountains on Tolkien's maps. (That is unless I missed somewhere amidst the 12+ volumes on my shelves and the various Kindle and other copies, something that indicates that Maglor and Maedhros are living on the beach somewhere.)

Now they are, as you well know. But in the time you're writing about... yes, hilly is good.

They suit my internal images also! Glad you can reinforce the image also.
