Oh I love the silly walk into Mordor. ;D And now you've done it. I am about to unleash more Python geekitude. The following is a bit of genius from Shamus Young who did a series of screen caps as a bunch of characters playing a Dungeons and Dragons version of Lord of the Rings. Opening scene here: www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=612Here's his Monty Python scene: Along with the instructions from the Dungeon Master: "This is, of course, the most pervasive problem in D&D, and one which the rules have never addressed. The tension of many battles has been ruined by some smart-alec suggesting they use the Holy Hand Grenade. No fortress – no matter how impressive or dangerous – will ever seem foreboding after one of the players points out that, “It’s only a model”. My own suggestion for the 4.0 edition rules: Anyone who quotes Holy Grail during a session should be made to eat their own character sheet." -From Shamus Young, DM of the Rings.

Oh I love the silly walk into Mordor. ;D And now you've done it. I am about to unleash more Python geekitude. That is very funny. But as for me, I try to keep direct Python references to a minimum. The FotR parody, and the Python 'Hobbit' parody preceding it (as well as the 'Two Towers' I am currently plodding through), are 'in-the-style' of Python and aren't merely rehashes of Dwarves signing 'The Spam Song' or Gandalf rabbiting on about dead parrots or an Elvish choir singing 'Every Sperm is Sacred' (although that might be amusing). It is a pastiche with satire, innuendo, metafictional narration, mockery of post-modern literary conventions and general mayhem within the dialogue. Virtuella insists it has very little to do with Monty Python, and is more me being my absurd self with Python as an influence. She is probably right -- although don't let her know I said so. ;p

OMG!! Just a small note here to point out that morning coffee, keyboards, screens, and the above do not mesh well (wiping up laughter-spew from the above...but SO worth a laugh at 5:15 in the morning).

I didn't see a thread for this, so I started one. If anyone has a story they want nominated, post the link here--I've got plenty of open slots. So far I've only nominated one of my own--been too out of the loop to do anything else. Last year I didn't participate at all, and hope to make it up a bit this year. I am at your service, as the Dwarf said to the Hobbit. Seriously? I have some short pieces that haven't yet been nominated; here are a couple.... Expectationswww.henneth-annun.net/stories/chapter.cfm?stid=8045After the Hour of Doomstories.storiesofarda.com/chapterview.asp?sid=6518&cid=28164But only if you actually like the pieces, or at least find them worthy of MEFA nomination. A wonderful offer, G.A.; much thanks! Raksha

Hi Raksha
I'd be happy to nominate these pieces. Please note, however, that there seems to be a formatting problem with "Expectations" (the last paragraph) that you probably would want to fix.

Thanx much, G.A . And thanx for the heads-up about the formatting glitch in Expectations at HASA; I've fixed it.

... there are certain hobbit writers that I very much enjoy, but there are a couple who're just so very, very intent on making Frodo into either a saint or a Christ-figure and in some cases are so heavy-handed with the Christian imagery that it throws me right out of the story. Funny, I think I have come across at least one of those, and I swiftly gave up reading on the same grounds. I don't mind riotous hobbits, fond of food and fun, but I don't tend to read hobbit fics because many writers tend to portray them as little children with furry feet, living cute lives with hundreds of uncles and aunts whose names I fail to remember. ;D Behind on this thread, but cannot resist commenting. I was thinking about all the times I have been picked on and/or dismissed by by LotR writers who write that they cannot get hooked by Tolkien's First Age because there are too many names starting with Fin- (what? all four of them?) But they never complain about all those Hobbit names ("hundreds of uncles and aunts whose names I fail to remember"!! hear! hear!), which I cannot keep straight to save my life! Oh, well, what would anyone expect knowing me? I chose to live in NYC and love it, not in a hole in the side of a hill. I grew up in a semi-rural setting in Southern Indiana. I knew too well from firsthand experience the results of intellectual and cultural isolation to find it inspiring or romantic. I skimmed the Hobbit parts of LotR before I finally had the self-discipline to read them all. Still am not inspired by Hobbit genealogies.

I actually wrote an essay about why this approach does no justice to either Tolkien or Christianity and explained why Frodo is very much not a Messiah. But...but...looking at all the stunning coincidences and remarkable parallels, one can only assume that Frodo is the Messiah: 1) Frodo and Jesus are both 2 syllables, Hobbiton and Nazareth are both three syllables, and Pontius Pilate and Sauron Gorthaur have four syllables. 2) Jesus was baptized in a river and Frodo's parents drowned in a river! 3) Jesus rose from the dead and Samwise married Rose! 4) Yahweh and Eru are both foreign sounding names! 5) Both Jesus and Frodo have fan-fiction written about them. It's just that Jesus has his posted in the bible. 6) Jesus was nailed, Frodo was skewered! 7) Jesus was not accepted by the Pharisees of the Jewish establishment, while Frodo was not accepted by the Literati of the Post-modern establishment! 8) Jesus' righthand man, Peter, became Pope, while Frodo's righthand man, Sam, had rope. 9) Neither Jesus nor Frodo got married or had a real job. 10) Both Jesus and Frodo had feet. Doesn't that just cause the hair on the nape of your neck to tingle?
