Right now, the 'most recent posts' link in info bar at the bottom of the main page will show you the 33 most recent messages. Is this enough? Over the past week, we've had an explosion of activity on the board, and I'm finding that 33 posts doesn't cover all of what happens even in a few hours.
If people think it's a good idea, I can up that number to 50 or 70 or 486 or whatever. How many people rely on the 'most recent posts' link to read what's going on? How many think that 50 or 60 might be better than 33? Or would this make the page too long? Loading time shouldn't be too big a problem, since it's mainly text.
Or do we think the recent surge in activity will settle back down to normal levels soon, and 33 will suffice?

For my part, I'm OK with whatever everybody else decides. I generally watch the date/time of the boards I'm interested in rather than depend on the "Last X new posts".
But that's just me.

I agree that it would be good to up that number to at least 50 because that thread is primarily how I look at recent activity and boy have y'all been active the last couple of days. (The faux-flame war was great, btw. ;D) Probably we will settle down eventually but it doesn't hurt to have the recent posts thread be longer because you can just stop when you get to stuff you've already read. My problem has been missing people's fic posts amongst all the banter. Btw, hi to all the newbies: surgical steel, viv, robinka, peredhillover, errol. Did I miss anyone? *waves and then hands out noisemakers and glasses of champagne* I hope to get to know you better. Welcome to the party.

I've increased the number of the 'most recent posts' showing to 66, which should help people who sign in more infrequently. It looks like things are already slowing down to more normal levels, but it doesn't hurt to have more posts displayed. Like you say, people can just read up to where they left off.

I just noticed the increased "most recent" and appreciate it.
Never said I really like the new banner either! Thank you! Thank you!

Alright, in addition to increasing the number of most recent posts in the link of the same name, I've also found a script that displays all posts since your last visit. This feature can be found in the bottom right-hand corner of the main table, above the info centre.
It seems to take a long time to load for me, but it might be a handy link to have for people who are here only rarely and want to catch up on everything they've missed.

I could have used that last month when I was really busy doing something else and didn't check in for few days at a time. I never have caught up. The slow loading would not be a problem in a case like that.

For those of us who seem to be visually impaired (or just too tired to find it) can you be more specific?? I can't find this feature and it is something I'd love to use! *sulks*

I cannot see it, either.

No, that I see easily. Sorry I wasn't clearer in my whining. What I don't see is what to click on to see what has been posted since my last visit - the new-ish scripting that Darth was talking about above.
