This has been my unofficial rule for a while now, but I think it's time to go ahead and make it official.
It's always been policy to quickly grant green stars to new members who come here at the invitation of existing green star members. This will continue to be the case, but a minimum post requirement for invitees is now officially in effect. The minimum post count is... three. New members, regardless of who they are and who referred them here, will need a whopping three posts before the green star is given. I think this is a pretty piddly little requirement, but you'd be amazed at the number of people who sign up, make one post (or no posts), and never return. Generally, people who make it past three posts are the ones who go on to be active participants in the group.
Additionally, the three posts must be spread across at least two threads. One of those must be to a writing or research thread. In order to count, the three posts cannot all be to the welcome thread. One must be somewhere else (say, asking/replying to a research question or commenting on someone's story).
For new members who show up on their own, the green star rules have not changed. A small amount of participation is required, including either posting stories to a critique board or commenting on the works of other members. With regular participation, a green star should be given in two weeks.

Oh, why would people sign up and not join in the discussions? I thought we came here because we needed concrit/feedback/betas/punctuation/Tolkien research help?

Exactly, jdav. Which is why Darth's little requirement is such a small price to pay.

Oh, why would people sign up and not join in the discussions? I thought we came here because we needed concrit/feedback/betas/punctuation/Tolkien research help? I think some people sign up with good intentions, and then simply find that the forum setup just doesn't work for them. Some people discover they don't have time to keep up with the posts, or they're not too comfortable online and find the navigation difficult, or are intimidated by all the members here who already know each other, or they just forget about this place in the midst of all the other places they already visit. Most of the people who have joined lately, within the past several months, have kept up participation and become active members. Last year, that wasn't the case. Then, the majority of new members would join, maybe make one post, and then disappear. Looking at the list of members, there are many with no posts, several with one, and a handful with two or three. Of the 56 Lizard Council members, a third have three posts or fewer. But it seems that once people break the three-post barrier, odds are good that they'll go on to be regular participants. Even if they're not always posting, I still see them logging in to read.

What a slave-driver you are, Darth! Three whole posts! ;D
Just to clarify, and because I can't be arsed to log off and check, which threads are visible to non-green star members? And must you have a green star to open a WIP board?

I think three posts is a quite reasonable limit (really - just bust out the whip Darth - three?) Your board setup is great and the navigation is easy, but now I can't lie - this is a damn intimidating place to be at first - everyone knows everyone and ya'll are a frighteningly brilliant bunch . . . made me want to go run and hide back under my rock too, but I settled for a drink and a valium and just dove on in and I'm glad I did - makes me feel smarter just being 'round ya'll - I'm hoping the brilliance will rub off! I'm personally guilty of not doing much posting lately, but RL interferes at times and that just can't be helped . . . got THREE kids with the dang chicken pox with school starting on Monday and just suffered through THREE damn dentist appointments and I feel like I got an icepick driven through my brain . . . but you're right . . . I'm might not be doing much typing at the moment, but I'm certainly watching and reading, and I just LOVE IT ALL!! ;D Now will dab more pink lotion and drag aching ass back to warm rock and continue to read happily for now while passing out newly toasted baby crickets and mango margaritas to lizard friends!

What a slave-driver you are, Darth! Three whole posts! ;D I was thinking of making it four, but that just seemed excessive and unreasonable. The only threads that are visible to green-stars only are Stuff in Progress - Secure, Dribbles - Secure, NSFW, and LOLzard. The regular Stuff in Progress and Dribbles are viewable to any member (but not guests), and yellow-stars can have WIP boards thereon. There's a post in the Rules board that lists every single board and what's visible to whom. Guests can see some boards, yellow stars can see most, and green stars can see all.

I must admit, I laughed at the three post rule, especially compared to other boards where one must have 300 posts to be a full member. Three posts seems perfectly reasonable to me. Even those of us who only slip in from time to time can make that quota! ROTFLMAO!! ;D

I was thinking of making it four, but that just seemed excessive and unreasonable. What an absolute slave-driver, making poor folks wanting their green stars write four whole posts - and at least one of them something other than a "howdy". I just don't see how any new members can meet the criteria. (and excuse me while I try to extricate my tongue from protruding three inches through my cheek, as I've been told that it is somewhat unsightly...) ;D

Green star, schmeen star. I'm plotting a way to win back the coveted LOLzrd Blue Starâ„¢. Maybe I should write a ficlet dedicated to the sartorial splendo(u)r of the Valar.

I thought the Valar all went naked like Dr. Manhattan in Watchmen.
