Has anyone actually read the Lost Tales alll the way through, as a novel, instead of just using it as a reference and looking stuff up via the index?

It was all piecemeal. Reading it all the way through is my project for this month. I've tried and failed before, but now I'm halfway through book 1 and quite enjoying it. The early chapters drag, but once you reach the Chaining of Melko things liven up considerably. The Valar concoct a zany scheme to lure Melko out of Utumna, so they all show up at his front door and pretend they want to be pals. And they bind up Tulkas with the chain Aule forged for Melko's imprisonment in order that Tulkas be 'given to Melko's power and pleasure'. Melko falls for this and invites them in, whereupon he makes Manwe kneel before his throne. Tulkas is so enraged that he punches Melko in the face, and a kerfuffle ensues. Everyone is way more of a jackass than in the Silmarillion. It's brilliant. Or perhaps I'm far too easily amused by the thought of Melkor being punched in the face. Later, he's said to have a split lip. This strikes me as massively funny.

Valarin fisticuffs! As Gandalf's Apprentice once said, the Valar of Book of Lost Tales have so much more brio than those of The Silmarillion.
It's like a bar brawl!

[psst...how do attach pdf's to messages?] See attachment. Durrrrr. I was searching for an attachment button when modifying a message. So one needs to create a message to add the attachment, not to an existing message. Got it! And it worked, too. Thanks! That's very handy.

And yes, the Valar were more into intrigues and not as lofty as they appear in the Silmarillion, but closer to the Greek and Roman gods. I find them more believable in BoLT. And the trick to lure Melko... yes! ETA - I read that part again a couple of months ago, as "research" for the scene you said you wouldn't mind reading between Sauron and Eonwe Manwe. It's there where he comes up with the origin of the word tilkal - as the initials of the components it's made of!
