That's the quote I remember. My point is that if the Tatyar/Teleri/Sindar could produce an individual like that they probably weren't all the size of jockeys.
About who can call themselves Eldar: "According to Elvish legend the name Eldar 'People of the Stars' as given to all the Elves by the Vala Orome. It came however to be used to refer only to the Elves of the Three Kindreds (Vanyar, Noldor, and Teleri) who set out on the great westward march from Cuivienen (whether or not they remained in Middle-earth), and to exclude the Avari." Silmarillion, index
About Thingol being Sindarin: "Great power Melian lent to Thingol, who was himself great among the Eldar, for he alone of all the Sindar had seen with his own eyes the light of the Trees . . ."
Semantically that reads, to me, that he is Sindarin but unique in being not among the Dark-elves.

Yes, I had always understood it to be the Thingol and his followers were Sindar.
As I see it: Olwë and Elwë were brothers. They were Teleri. They became sundered when Olwë continued on to Aman, and founded Alqualondë, while Elwë stayed behind with that Maia. Elwë and his followers became known as Sindar - 'Grey Elves' - even though they were the same kindred as Olwë and his followers, the Lindai. As far as I can judge, Teleri and Sindar were separated by geography and, of course, by the fact that the only Sinda who saw the Light of the Trees was Thingol himself.

A friend of mine actually sat down and worked out the respective heights so I must find her livejournal post, and her permission, and pass it on to you guys. It makes for vertiginous reading but she remembers all the figures much better than I can! I'd love to see that post, Lalaith, if you're able to find it and your friend agrees! Those heights are insane - I have to admit, I never thought about the actual numbers! (Wow, Galadriel!) For some reason, this just reminds me of how many stories about extremely tall people ends with them dying of a foot infection...
