I know Gil-galad was young, and I've read dates somewhere, but can't remember them. And it's an important tidbit for my third Akallabêth in August fic. How old was he when the War of Wrath ended, and when did he actually become king? And less importantly, how old was he when the war began? Thank you.

I know Gil-galad was young, and I've read dates somewhere, but can't remember them. And it's an important tidbit for my third Akallabêth in August fic. How old was he when the War of Wrath ended, and when did he actually become king? And less importantly, how old was he when the war began? Gil-galad's birthyear is unknown. And estimating a birthyear for him is highly dependent on who you consider his father to be. If you go with the Silmarillion text that he was the son of Fingon (which I do, more or less), you can use my estimates if you like. I have him born in the year 445 of the First Age. I can no longer remember why, but I know that when I first decided this, I had a good reason for doing so. This would make him 10 or 11 years old when he is sent to the Falas. He is then 27 when Fingon dies, and too young to take the crown, so it is passed to his uncle Turgon. He becomes King at age 55, after Turgon's death. A secondary problem is that the years for the War of Wrath are different in every single source. I settled on having it begin in 547 (when Gil-galad is 92) and end in 587 (when Gil-galad is 132).

Thank you! Guess I read the dates in a fic somewhere, then. (Not terribly surprising…) Yours really helped-- what I needed to know was if he became king at a younger age than Elros did. And he did, so that makes me very happy that I don't need to change a scene.
