Post here your queries and woes about bent sticks and arrows in your fics, and I will do my best to answer, or ask other archers who may! My best qualification for posting this thread comes, clearly, from my club's senior coach's assessment, usually bellowed at the top of his voice when other people are close by: "Stop shooting like bloody Legolas!" (because sometimes I tilt my head against the string while aiming, like movie!Legolas). He, he, he! If he just knew it is the greatest compliment he could ever make me... ;D Soooo, to get started let's have some..., erm, movie archery - sorry, guys, I know this thread is under Historical Research, but this is strictly for inspiration: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cxGx2BsKkMThis next clip, however, is more about what you are allowed to do legally, unless you land yourself a role in an epic movie. www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4Vd3KP-LnQ (sorry, YouTube did not allow me to embed it)The English Heritage guy gets on my nerves ("simple, yeah right") but his yew murder weapon bow is just beautiful. And the law about men over seven years old shooting for two hours after mass on Sundays has not been abolished in England, believe it or not!

"Stop shooting like bloody Legolas!" (because sometimes I tilt my head against the string while aiming, like movie!Legolas). Hee, hee! This is an awesome idea, russandol. You know I'll be pestering you for details. Just to get started, could you relate what kind of bow you prefer shooting and how many pounds pull it has? I made a 40# bow in eighth grade and I've always wondered if it is a strong bow or if I was (and am) just a wimp.

I made a 40# bow in eighth grade and I've always wondered if it is a strong bow or if I was (and am) just a wimp. No, you are not a wimp, I would not start with a 40#. A good bow to begin with and develop your form is more like 20#-25#, but it depends on the bow, some are easier to draw than others. You definitely don't want to pull too hard, or you just struggle and the results are, well, poor. That is, if you don't end up injuring yourself. You need a glove or tab, too! Elves may be able to shoot without anything to protect the fingers from the string, but we mortals in the 21st century aren't. My current bow is a 70 1/4 inch English longbow (taller than me!), 35# at 24 inch draw, with horn nocks and arrow plate. After the holiday I am ordering a 40# one, again made to my spec by a traditional bowyer. I would love to learn to make my own (my hat off to you!) and know some of the theory, but I currently haven't got the time.

I'm running late and I got totally sucked into numerous archery/bow making videos. I SO want to play with arrows and bows and swords..... Your fault completely - I only gave TWO links! The rest, I am sure, was just you falling for YouTube... But yes, archery is highly addictive. Never tried swordfighting, except for wooden "swords" when I was little, and now with my son, who likes bashing my knuckles when we "spar" with them. Ouch!

Realizing that there is another tale over the hills of my computer desk - I give up...I admit that I am addicted to my computer... - Erulisse (one L)

Now, this is surely how Legolas learnt to shoot from a horse - he would not paint a fake beard on, though, or would he? The bow is bigger than the boy (9 years old!) and the pony. Isn't this cute? Sorry about the advert, can't get rid of it. Click on the YouTube logo if you want to watch it in a bigger window on the YouTube site. Now, as for the famous debate... would this be possible without tack?

I loved this. Stirrups were invented (postulated) to increase stability for warriors on horseback so that they could use bows and swords more effectively. But, as can be seen on this video, a good part of success is also the training of the horse (loved it when the pony went off the track and had to be manouvered back onto it).
I dearly want to do archery, and this just makes me want it more. Maybe I should have insisted that I wanted that hobby farm many years ago instead of settling down as a city girl. A horse and an archery area just won't fit into my back yard <sigh>.

That same guy in YouTube has got a video on basic horse training. The horse has to get used to be touched by the bow and arrows, and to the sounds: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuqXIpdpIPc Ah, there are a few places here in the UK where they teach you mounted archery, if you can ride and shoot a bow (separately!). I might be tempted to have a go one day. I expect that, stirrups or not, I would end up with my bum on the ground!
