Oh my word; here I think obsessing over the perfect word in a sentence is much, yet here you all are wracking your brains to figure out measures, weights, etc. Though I had a similar problem when I wrote my recent finished story, figuring how long it would take someone from the edge of the Golden Wood to get to Thranduil's halls. But then I solved it by having the characters hitch-hike a ride on Giant Eagles (I can explain, really!). I must really go into research mode from now on if I am to ever excel in my writings!

I remember the discussion about the ships and distance/time on board. And I have my Atlas of Middle Earth, but my stories haven't had to deal with distance per day yet. But this is important, so I'm eager to see what we can come up with.

Two to three weeks depending on the mode of travel -- foot or horseback. I also figure that the size of the party slows it down, so single messenger would make the trip in much less time than, say, a party of six.

I cross-referenced maps and such between The Hobbit and appendices of LotR. Thanks
