Yes, elves are mature. Yes, elves are noble. No, we never had an instance of Legolas saying, "Oh shit!" in the Trilogy. But that means very little, because we simply never saw what goes on behind the scenes in Elvish life.Which is why we need excellent writers (aka Lizards) to fill in the gaps! Thanks for nuath and huitho - - what does huitho mean? (or should I ask?)

I owe the Sindarin version of the word to Darth. Huithad is Sindarin for the marital act. Huitho would be the affirmative command verb form. Which is as near as I can get to the spirit behind it when we let fly with the F-word today.

And thank you for the icon love This is the only place I felt I could use this one without offending someone lol I have a few of them I found that are a combination of HP, Star Wars, and LOTR. Feel free to snag. I *love* the one with Snape! ;D However, the Walmart one is great, too! Especially "Volde*mart". Snort!

Caesar was a military leader, loved by his soldiers, though. I am pretty sure he was very capable of a ... colorful language. And that he would have used it while he was in the field, too (as well as Pompeius, and Scipio, and others who had to live with their armies for some time).

*sigh* Betas and their well-meant attempts to spread fanon. Elves never curse because . . .? They'll give you a whole lot of reasons that are basically fannish conclusions. Yes, elves are mature. Yes, elves are noble. No, we never had an instance of Legolas saying, "Oh shit!" in the Trilogy. But that means very little, because we simply never saw what goes on behind the scenes in Elvish life. Except in The Hobbit, where they get drunk and use contractions in their speech. So there. I confess that I've never had Thranduil saying, "Dammit!" or, "Oh hell!" anymore than I'd write an archaic character like Julius Caesar saying those lines. But that's very different from, "He has damned himself with his own words." It's a translation after all. I'm thinking of something between HBO's Rome and the series Deadwood for some of the parts of The Silmarillion--I could picture some pretty nasty language between Fingolfin and Feanor or Feanor and Melkor. But then I don't try to write archaic or Tolkienesque, or what I think of as epic heroic. Your choice of language works in your stories--that's what counts. I like to think that mine works in mine and my elves do curse--more than yours I'm pretty sure. I'd have to do a line by line comparison. You do make good use of Elvish and semi-archaic language to match their earthier expressions with your general style.

Today in my web meanderings, I came across the following site: The Random Shakespearean insult generator. (Don't ask me how I found it, not even sure myself.) Some of these are priceless, such as this one: Thou gleeking idle-headed horn-beast! This makes me realize that my elves have not been nearly imaginative enough in their choice of colorful swears. Must remedy this right away. So, that means I've got to find a reason for some elf to say, "Thou gorbellied elf-skinned joithead!" or some such variation in a fic. Here's the link: www.acepilots.com/bard/random-insult.htmlEnjoy! (btw, apparently Boeing aircraft is sponsoring this little gem. I apologize for the ads, but I have to commend whoever in Boeing came up with this one.)

That's taking Hotspur's "mouth-filling oath" (Henry IV, Part I) to the height of literalness.
