Looking for the meaning of several canon character names I came across a site that provides the translations of names in the indexes of the Silmarillion and LOTR. The owner/author of the page is Robert Ireland. The link is: www.quicksilver899.com/Tolkien/Tolkien_Dictionary.htmlMy Quenya/Sindarin knowledge is basic at best, and derivation of words from the Etymologies is an arcane science for me. Has anybody used this dictionary in the past? Is it a good resource? Or shall I have a quick go at reverse-engineering Pixellated Feanor instead and make it work backwards? ;D

Has anybody used this dictionary in the past? Is it a good resource? Or shall I have a quick go at reverse-engineering Pixellated Feanor instead and make it work backwards? ;D Huh, I've never seen that before. Most of it looks pretty solid, since it's just a compiled list of stuff that's published elsewhere. But the usual suspects (Erestor, Maedhros, Thranduil) are, as always, muddled guesses. He picked up MAHA from QL in reference to Mahal and Mahtan, so I wonder why nobody thought Erestor might be connected to QL RESE? The crazy HTML-circa-1995 design and background images make the site seem a lot less worthwhile than it is, though. I'm left wondering what the hell is going on there. Reverse-engineering Pixellated Feanor though... good grief, if you can think of the coding to do it, let me know! That sounds like an impossible task. Of course, last year at this time I thought the Sindarin generator was impossible, until I thought it through more carefully... Incidentally, it is possible to make both Erestor and Maedhros on that generator. Erestor is er+restor (meaning 'single helper') and Maedhros is maen+ros (meaning 'clever red-head'). These are probably not the meanings Tolkien had in mind, though.

Mmm, it was Erestor and Thranduil I went for as well.
For Erestor an Internet search only managed to find links to slashy stories with Glorfindel, loads of pictures and a little hidden thread in the Tolkien Language list. What they said there seemed to be included in this dictionary, so I was curious to find out if anyone knew about it.
What's your own take on Erestor?
About Thranduil you said...
This dictionary settles for "slender shadow" or even "slender sprout" - rather amusing to think of Thranduil as a lettuce or a leek!
It looks as if they have not updated it recently - the website's copyright is for 2002. And yes, the format is ... unappealing is the polite term.
Funny you can get these two names through Pixie-Feanor! I must have a go myself in a minute!

What's your own take on Erestor? My own take on Erestor is that it probably contains the Qenya word restor (meaning 'kinsman' or 'helper'). When the name was first created, Erestor was written to be a kinsman of Elrond, so this could be the meaning Tolkien had in mind.
