I promised Lenine and Jael I'd show off this amusingly large spreadsheet that I created for the purpose of defining Sindarin name rules. Shown here!
Some things to keep in mind:
1) The spreadsheet is 40 rows tall by 41 columns wide, for a total of 1640 possible combinations.
2) Ignore the "html" sheet.
3) Also ignore the "rules" sheet, unless you want to read the 784 distinct rules that went into making this generator.
How to Use the Excel Sindarin Name Generator (significant amount of assembly required):
Go to elffetish.com/SindaName1.php to choose your words. You can use the radio buttons if you want, but they really do bugger all right now. Pay attention to the ending letter(s) and beginning letter(s) of your words. If your words end or begin in vowel/consonant clusters, you'll need to take the whole cluster.
If your first word is acharn, for the purposes of this spreadsheet, it ends in RN. Achass ends in SS. Adan ends in N. Dae ends in AE, and ri ends in I.
For second words, adel begins with A, ael begins with AE, delu begins with D, and clor begins with CL.
Example: to combine the words acharn and clor:
Look down the first column to find the RN row (row 31). Everything across row 31 will be how ending RN combines with all possible beginnings.
Look across the first row to find the CL column (column H). Everything down column H will be how CL combines with all possible endings.
RN and CL meet in cell H31 and produce a result of RGL. REPLACE the underlined ending and beginning letters from the two words with the combination result. Acharn + clor = Acharglor.
If your two words combine in a results cell that is yellow or blue, follow the normal combination rules.
If your results cell is pink, the two words combine with no alteration. Alph + aran = Alpharan.
If your results cell has a red or purple E, the words cannot be combined. Alph + celeg = ERROR. When this happens, you can try switching the order of the words. Celeg + alph = Celegalph. (Or, of course, you can choose new words.)
If your result contains a star, you'll need to go through the combination process again with the new ending and beginning. Celw + gaeron = Celu*aeron = Celaeron.
And now you know everything about Sindarin name combinations!
There will be a final exam tomorrow.
