I distinctly recall read something of Darth's about the meaning of Fingon/Findekáno's name. Disputing/discussing finde=hair, káno=commander. Where was that?
Sorry, I am also working to a deadline. Doing a character bio of Fingon which I have to finish this week and then would like to have people read it before I submit it.

For some reason I'm thinking it might have been on GoI, but I found nothing there. It also may have been on my LJ. Anyhow, there's a bit about the FINI root word in the Finwe, Olwe, Mahtan and Erestor thread under Canon/Characters, which mentions that the FIN element in Finwe has nothing to do with hair. (The support for this is in Lost Tales 1: look up Finwe in the index and you'll find a little discussion of his name.)
Because Feanor, Fingolfin, and Finarfin were all named directly after Finwe, we can assume that the FIN- element in those names, as well as Fingon and Finrod, are based on the same root. So the FIN in Findekáno has nothing to do with hair, but is a reference to his famous grandfather.

Thank you so much!! I appreciate it. (I think it was the Erestor, et al., write-up that I was thinking of...)

The Qenya word 'finde' meaning 'cunning' is listed on the Finwe etc. thread. Findekáno would therefore mean 'cunning commander', so named because of the FIN-element tie to Finwe.

Thanks more! Hope you do not mind if I footnote you (don't worry, I will run the whole thing by you here first).
