So Sámaril finally lured me back to Gaillond, and I have been working on the next chapter of The Elendilmir. But for the chapter after that, I'm thinking of visiting this (more or less) local museum to do some research. Now if I were really hardcore, I'd go down for the Moby Dick Marathon.

Oh wow! What a cool looking place to visit. I can hardly wait for Salmaril and the Great White Whale :-)

Museums are great places to do research for those little details to make your world more real. It's not completely analogous, but I know I learned a lot about whiskey making from touring the Old Jameson's Distillery and about beer-making from touring the Guinness Warehouse and the Sam Adams brewery. The teensiest details never made it into fic, but sometimes you need those details to make it sound like the characters know what they're talking about.
Also, if you want a hint of the seagoing mind, I highly, highly recommend Linda Greenlaw's 'Seaworthy.' Her fiction I'm not 100% crazy about - the details of life in coastal Maine are great, but sometimes it's like she's trying too hard to find that perfect phrase and comes across as a creative writing exercise. Her non-fiction, though, is fantastic IMO.
