OK, so I've got a ballet dancer in a typical fantasy setting. His costume is of silk. Will he have more freedom of movement with trousers or hose or leggings? Is there any difference between hose and leggings? I know my ignorance is showing, but I don't think spandex was around back then, and I'm afraid that if I put him in hose, he'll have problems with it binding. Any thoughts?

I know nothing about dance, but I'll offer my two pence as there are no takers. You just have to look at the portraits of the Tudors and/or the Spaniards of the time wearing tight-fitting hose. If they could ride horses in that stuff, they must have been able to dance too, provided they fitted well, even without spandex. After all, they did courtly dancing in that gear, didn't they? They definitely show the legs better than wider trousers, which is a plus over trousers. I'm sure that type of hose could be made out of silk, far less itchy than wool, LOL. Or maybe of very thin suede / leather?

Hose it is, then. Gold silk is shiny and this guy is a Firemaster. I'm off to write more!

Hose I'd say. Hose was made by knitting in stockinette stitch which is very elastic, and the material used was probably really finely spun wool. Remember in those times women spun their own wool.

I am glad I could be of assistance. All those craft books pay off.

Also any fabric cut in bias will stretch a bit. Not like spandex, but enough to make comfortable linen or wool hose. Granted, I've only ever worn the ladies version which only goes up to the knee, but I've yet to meet a man who'd have any complaints about the full-length ones
