Do any lizards know if there is anything resembling a Rohirric calendar? My rudimentary searches did not turn up anything, but I’m fairly out of my comfort zone when it comes to Tolkien’s Mannish societies.
Thanks to the writerly tyranny of drabble prompts, I really ought to figure out when the Rohirrim considered the new year to fall. Or even clues about Men in general on that subject would be helpful.

I can't find anything specifically about Rohan, but the Encycopedia of Arda has an interactive calendar which lets you compare dates across the known calendars of M-e (Shire calendar, Steward's calendar, etc.): www.glyphweb.com/arda/dates.html?dn=355Both Hobbits and Men of Numenor (and their descendants in Gondor and the North) had 2 days to mark the end of the old year and the beginning of the new: 1 Yule and 2 Yule for the Hobbits, yestarë and mettarë for Men. It could probably be extrapolated that the Rohhirim likewise designated 2 days, but with Rohrric names. In my own stories (and in my mind) I have often danced around specific dates by tying holidays to the solar and lunar calendar-- solstice celebrations, etc. Is it critical that you have an exact date, or can you creatively fudge/vaguel infer?

I have no idea. I think I would have seen a Rohirric calendar if one existed. I would probably extrapolate something depending upon my needs and mood if I were you. Because of the Old English language question in Rohan I would personally probably allow myself to at least consider if there were any Anglo-Saxon holidays I would want to look at before inventing some out of the whole cloth.

Kenaz – Oh thanks, I hadn’t run into the interactive calendar before. Which is actually quite sufficient for my purposes; it’s just a drabble, but I at least wanted to be sure I was getting the setting right season-wise. For all I knew, some 3rd Age cultures did not mark the new year during the winter, but since it appears the notable ones do that’s good enough for me.
Oshun – I like your ideas about the Anglo-Saxon correlation and may do just that if I ever need to get more in-depth with Rohirric culture.
