But if a writer wants to find that hero attractive on any kind of human level, then he cannot be green with scales and/or eight feet tall. It just doesn't work for me.
The aliens in Avatar were not only blue but 12 foot tall, and some people seemed to find that idea pretty attractive. I was not one of them.
I have a friend who said they didn't look alien enough, that they should have mixed up the facial sensors so that the actor smiling would cause the character's ears to pivot, or that blinking would make their mouths move, so it would look alien. I tried to explain to him that without human reactions, the audience couldn't identify with the characters. I think this idea of size is the same thing. Going overboard makes them unrelatable.
One hears "she wants a knight in shining armour to ride into their life," but not "what I really need is an eight-foot man."
LOL I have to admit I've never heard anyone say they need an eight foot man. Unless they need to change a light bulb or something.
How could Fingolfin have inflicted crippling permanent injuries on Melkor with those kinds of size discrepancies or Glorfindel and Ecthelion have killed balrogs, even if they died in doing so?
You've never heard of an achilles tendon? lol
But I agree. It reaches a point where the relative sizes get so ridiculous it inspires laughter rather than fear.
What I thought was a great piece of artwork was the picture on the wall of Elrond's house in FOTR of Isildur fighting Sauron. It looks like the kind of picture someone would paint of a legendary encounter many years after the fact.
I'm a fragile little creature. I like hearts and flowers.
Ginormous hearts and Gargantuan flowers? lol
